Hey Charlie Listeners!

Tonight the Party Patrol heads back to The Majestic Theatre for the first 80s VS. 90s Party of 2011!! In anticipation for the dueling decade party tonight, I got to thinking…which is better, the 80s or the 90s? I paired up my favorite things from each decade in the hopes to find which decade would win out.

MOVIES:
Here is the first pairing – my favorite 80s movie (“Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”) vs. my favorite 90s movie (“Clueless”). Let’s be honest, I still break into a rendition of “rollin’ with the homies” when I’m drunk and know that if you really want to insult someone, you refer to them as “a virgin…who can’t drive.” Ugh, and those cell phones! Though the “Clueless” girls still hold a place in my heart, I have never, EVER gotten over my crush on Ferris Bueller. If I could date/marry/worship at the feet of one fictional character, I would pick him every time.

WINNER: THE 80s!

And a "Danke Shoen" to YOU Mr. Bueller.

MUSIC:
Let’s be honest, the 80s gave birth to some unforgettable music. Madonna felt “Like a Virgin,” Wang Chung just wanted everybody to “Have Fun Tonight,” and Michael Jackson’s red jacket in “Thriller” is still the epitome of cool. But as much as I appreciate the corny-ness of Duran Duran music videos, there’s still something to be said about the 90s. Maybe it’s just because these songs take me right back a decade, but for me nothing will ever top Vanilla Ice, Oasis, Celine Dion, or The Spice Girls(!). I know many will disagree with me, but IMO, 90s music absolutely kills.

WINNER: THE 90s!

I think these two are really gonna last

AWFUL (AWESOME) FASHION TREND:
What did you do in the 90s when you wanted a hands free way to carry objects, yet a purse or wallet seemed impractical? Why you snapped on a fanny pack and looked freakin’ awesome! What can be said about this awful (awesome) trend of the 90s? They were practical, but I cringe when I see pictures of myself (and my entire family – one vacation we all had one) toting that Day-Glow Pink pack with pride. The 80s, however, had their own fashion misgivings. I can still remember when my mom wore shoulder pads like they were going out of style (oh wait…) and I both am glad and envy that I never got to have huge crispy mall hair. I can’t help but wonder what people will look back on in 20 years and cringe at…

WINNER: IT’S A TIE

HOTTIE ALERT

SUPERSTARS:

I wanted the tie breaker round to be a tough one…I really did. But when you compare Madonna and Michael Jackson to Kurt Cobain and Jennifer Aniston, the winner is so clear. Yes, Kurt Cobain was so grungy and Jennifer Aniston is so Rachel-ey, and both were SO 90s. However, even though MJ is no longer with us and Madonna now has scary arms (seriously), no one can deny that as far as cultural icons go these to 80s stars have the most staying power.

THE 80s FTW!!!!!!!!!

Hopefully this competition has inspired you to visit the 80s vs. 90s party at the Majestic Theatre tonight to jam out to the best songs from each decade. And don’t forget, Chip and I will be around giving out free Charlie FM schwag and prizes!! Stop by and say “HI!” See you tonight! And long live the 80s…and the 90s!
